Individuals commonly telegraph the strength of their cards through actions, eye movements, breathing rates, and the tennor of their voice. Poker is a sport of emotion and a lot of folks cannot control their emotions when money is involved. In order to spot a tell you have to accurately pay attention to your competitors on every single hand. Watch for any form of wagering pattern or body tell that relates to the strength of their hand. If an opponent constantly breaths deeply when he has a strong hand, that’s a tell for extreme strength. If a competitor always stakes his weak hands with a twitch of his wrist, that is a tell for absolute weakness.

Tells permit you to see further than your own cards and into your competitor’s mind. Focus on all the things that your competitor does while she plays a pot and try to link each action to a relative strength of their cards. With the ability to notice tells on your competitor, the cards really don’t matter. If your competitor tells you that she is weak, you will be able to raise her with any hand with the knowledge that he’ll drop out. If your opponent indicates you that she is strong, you’ll be able to fold really strong hands. There is more to poker than just the cards you’re given. Concentrate on your opponent’s mannerisms and your winnings will skyrocket.
