Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline
by Maci on Jan.02, 2019, under Poker
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha Hi-Lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
