Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, along with a few shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
