Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
