Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi-low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming range of wagering choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
