Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often compete against one another. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
