Omaha Hi/Low: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and a few battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
