Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of wagering possibilities and because you have many players battling for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
