Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world today. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
