Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game with ease.
